adding system.diagnostics section to web.config causes: 500 server error

I’m trying to enable tracing in my mvc4 web app on my production server.  I’ve added the following to web.config and i now get a 500 server error.  I’m guessing I’m missing some component, but I not sure how to proceed.  Seems to be referencing System.dll
according to object viewer.  Is there a new version?  This works find on my dev server, naturally.

<system.diagnostics>
  <trace>
      <listeners>
          <add name="WebPageTraceListener"
               type="System.Web.WebPageTraceListener, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"/>
      </listeners>
  </trace>
</system.diagnostics>

Is .NET 2.0 installed on your production server?
